Read Downloading, Installing and Editing fonts in Photoshop Now

Design Quote from Steve Jobs
In this tutorial you will learn how to download a font from the website "dafonts", install onto your computer, and how to change and style the font using the properties of the Text Tool in Photoshop.

Step one:

Create new file

Creating a new file

Step Two:

Go to the website “dafont”. And select desired font to download. I have chosen the font called “Elkwood” for this demo.

"dafont.com" Logo

The file will download as a zip file in the download area. Double click to unzip the folder and install the font file. This will then appear in the text section in Photoshop.

Installing of the font

Step Three:

In Photoshop select the Text tool to create new text.

Selected the font “Elkwood”. And click on the canvas. This will create a new layer.

Creating a new "Layer" in Photoshop

Step Four:

Enter your desired text. For the demo I am using a quote from Steve Jobs creator of Apple “Design is not what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works”.

Example of the text used

I am now going to add different character setting using the character and paragraph panels.

Selecting the Character and Paragraph panels to change the text

By changing the settings in the character and paragraph panels, it allows you to selected different sizes for the font, different colours. It also gives you the option to space out the letter both horizontal (across) and vertical (up and down). I have changed the font size, the colour and both the horizontal and vertical of the text. As shown in the image below.

Different options used in the Character and Paragraph for the text

Step Five:

Effects after changing the settings in the character and paragraph panels.. For this demo I have added a drop shadow to the text. To do this you need to right click on the text layer and a drop bar will appear, here you can select the blending mode to create different effects to the text. The Blending options show in the below image.

Blending Options on the drop down menu

Then I selected to add a drop shadow to the text. I added in different settings as show in the image below. This gives a shadow effect to the text. The sample is not intended to be inspiring! But rather a simple example showing that the text can be edited. Explore the various layers styles to create a text effect that suits your design project.

Read Rendering in Blender Now

Sample blender render

What is Rendering ?

Rendering is the final process of CG (short of post processing) and is the phase in which a 2D image corresponding to your 3D scene is finally created. Rendering is a CPU-intensive process. You can render an image on your computer, or use a render farm which is a network of PCs that each work on a different section of the image or on different frames.

Why use it ?

We use rendering in blender in order to make our object more lifelike and realistic. We use it to turn an object into 3D or make a scene more realistic.

How to use Rendering

1. In order to create a finished rendered image you must first create a scene. To do this you press shift + A and then select mesh then plane. Once you have this done press "S" to scale your object to desired width of a standard floor. Do the same procedure for the walls

2. Next add in some more standard objects in a room such as a table, chairs. You can model these or download them from www.blendswap.com

3. Once you have this completed add in some materials and textures to make your scene more realistic. Be sure to check our tutorial on how to add materials and textures in blender. Once completed press F11 and your image will render.

With added objects and lighting you can achieve renders such as the sample below.

What is Lighting?

Lighting is a very important topic in rendering, standing equal to modelling, materials and textures. The most accurately modelled and textured scene will yield poor results without a proper lighting scheme, while a simple model can become very realistic if skilfully lit.

Why would you use it?

People use lighting in order to make their object more realistic and easier to see. It also makes your object better looking in general. You also need lighting in your scene if you wish to create a rendered video or image.

Different types of lighting

Point light:

1. In order to do this you must press shift + A and select lamp then select point then place this light somewhere on your scene

Sun light:

1. Repeat the same process that you did for point but this time select sun, you should try place this light up high and at an angle to your object in order to get a good effect

Spot light:

1. Again, repeat the same process except select spot, you should place this above your object in order to get the desired effect. This light emits light in a cone like direction

Hemi light:

1. Same again, repeat the process and select hemi. This is a 180® directional light which emits light downwards

Area light:

1. Same steps again just select area instead. This is an upward light that emits light from the plane.

4. Reduce ambient occlusion to 0.5

5. Go to the Gather column in World tab

6.  Adjust samples to preferred amount of samples. This makes the picture more realistic but my recommendation is not to go over 10 as it may crash your computer

7. Press 7 for top view

8. Then duplicate the lamp by pressing Shift + D and place lamps at the front, the back, and the side

9.  Then adjust the energy on both duplicate lamps. To do this you have to go to the object data tab and adjust the energy settings

Read Importing Static Meshes into UE4 Now

Final Result

WHAT ARE STATIC MESHES?

Static meshes are polygon meshes which are an important in many game engines including Unreal Engine, Source and Unity. The word static refers to the fact that static meshes can’t be vertex animated as they can be moved around, scaled or reskinned.

WHY USE STATIC MESHES?

Static meshes are very useful for beginners who don’t have a lot of experience. Beginners can use static meshes to help create scenes in their game. There a fast and easy method of creating scenes. You can also use them to try and create your own unique mesh by adding on a new texture or changing the colour.

IMPORTING A STATIC MESH

STEP 1

The first step is to go on to blendswap and to find a subtle mesh for your game

Make sure to get a static mesh for your game at blendswap. link is available above.

STEP 2

You will then want to download a static mesh that you plan on using in your game. After the download make sure to extract the file.

When your waiting for your download you should look at different static meshes that you could use in your game.

STEP 3

When its done downloading make sure you extract file by clicking on the extract to.

Make sure you extract your static mesh somewhere thats easy to find.

STEP 4

After down loading it you will want to open it up in blender.

When you bring in a static mesh you can scale it to suit your game

STEP 5

After bringing it in you will want to remove the background to your static mesh and change it to suit your game. You can try out putting different textures on your mesh.To delete a background select it by right clicking then press x to delete.

The image above shows the static mesh in blender

STEP 6

Before bringing your static mesh into unreal engine you must export your mesh as an FBX
file.

The image above will help guide you exporting your meshes.

After clicking export you will want to select the mesh option under Export FBX

STEP 7

Import the static mesh into your game and scale it down or up depending on the mesh. To import your static mesh go to your content browser then click the import button to bring in your static mesh. The default import options will suit most meshes but be sure to read through them and make any changes you feel are necessary.
